The Kaduna State Government on Sunday said the imposition of a 24-hour curfew on Kaduna metropolis and environs was a preemptive measure to avert breakdown of law and order.
The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has deployed the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 7, Taiwo Lakanu, to lead a police intervention force to Kaduna to ensure that normalcy return to the area.
President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the latest communal violence in Kasuwan Magani in Kaduna State which claimed 55 lives.
The State Commissioner of Police, Ahmad Abdur-Rahman, who disclosed this at a press briefing in Kaduna, said that the police had arrested 22 suspects in connection with the mayhem.
A statement signed by Samaila Aruwan, Senior Assistant to Governor Nasir El-Rufai on Media and Publicity, said that the curfew was “with immediate effect”
The group said in a statement signed by its Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Kagarko, that measures must also be taken by government and security agencies to prevent escalation of the crisis.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Muhktar Aliyu, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Kaduna that 10 people were killed and 15 injured during the crisis.
The government said the security agencies must investigate “this unfortunate incident, arrest and make available for prosecution the perpetrators”.
