Erico died on January 21, 2021 in Lagos at the age of 72 after a brief illness, with family sources saying Erico had complained of body pains and was being treated for malaria. The Nigeria Football Federation General Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi, paid him a glowing tribute in a statement, describing him as one of the best goalkeepers Nigeria has ever produced.

Erico was also part of the coaching crew that led Super Eagles to the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations tournament that was held in Lagos and also helped qualify Nigeria for the 2002 AFCON and World Cup.
Family sources said the flamboyant trainer of trainers and respected nurturer of talents complained of body pain and was treated for malaria, only to be found dead in his bed at dawn on Thursday.
The Nigeria Football Federation’s spokesperson, Ademola Olajire, confirmed Erico’s death on Thursday.
