For the umpteenth time, the Muslim Media Practitioners of Nigeria (MMPN) has reiterated its call on the Federal and state governments in Nigeria to declare Muharram 1, the first day of the Islamic Hijrah Calendar 1445 A.H, as a public holiday.

“On the occasion of the Islamic New Year, and the commemoration of the Hijrah, I urge Muslims and other citizens to imbibe the lessons of compassion, peace, and support for one another. I wish all Muslims a blessed year,” said the president.
Lawan said it is appropriate to use the occasion to thank the Almighty Allah for the privilege He mercifully granted us to witness the New Year.
The State Commissioner for Information, Malam Muhammad Garba, announced this via a statement on Wednesday in Kano.
The Director of Muslim Rights Concern, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, has urged the Federal Government to make the treatment of Malaria free.
The Islamic year started counting in 622 AD after the emigration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in Saudi Arabia.
The groups are the Muslim Community of Oyo State, Muslim Consultative Forum, Muslim Media Practitioners of Nigeria, Obafemi Awolowo University Muslim Graduates Association and Movement for Islamic Culture Awareness.
Others are the Bodija Muslim Youth Forum, National Council of Muslim Youths Organisations, Muslim Rights Concern and Muslim Students Society of Nigeria.
The groups, in separate Hijrah 1435 A.H. messages, said such a declaration would be in line with the rule of law, fairness and justice to Muslims in the country
