Speaking during the opening ceremony of a three-day conference in Enugu, on Monday, being attended by all the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) member-states and declared open by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, the Director-General of WAHO, Prof. Stanley Okolo, disclosed that the laboratory strengthening programmes, which include “both those funded by community levy and those funded by our partners” are in the spirit of taking ECOWAS to the grassroots.

Speaking during the opening ceremony of a two-day United Nations (UN) joint workshop on Institutionalizing Social Protection for Accelerated SDGs Implementation in Nigeria, in Enugu, the State Commissioner for Special Duties and the Focal Person on SDGs, Mabel Agbo, who represented Gov. Ugwuanyi at the event, assured the UNDP and the Federal Government that Gov. Ugwuanyi’s administration will not take the selection for granted.

Ugwuanyi also directed that the new Administrators must engage all Traditional Rulers, Presidents of Town Unions, Religious Leaders, Youth Organizations, Women Organizations, Neighbourhood Watch groups, Forest Guards and indeed all stakeholders in their respective Development Areas to inspire a grassroots security architecture underpinned by robust intelligence gathering and communication of same to security agencies.

Ugwuanyi had, in furtherance of his administration’s efforts to encourage and ensure that the federal government comprehensively rehabilitates the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, last year, to function at optimum capacity and efficiency, for the safety of air travelers, among other time-honoured interventions, promised to reconstruct the VOR/DME access road for NAMA, to aid its all-important operations at the site.
