Babangida made this call in a statement signed by himself and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Minna on Monday to commemorate democracy day.
He said: ‘‘I had a close relationship with him over the years but I take solace in the fact that, we all came from Allah and to Him we shall all return.
The former leader described the assembly as “a forum that should be encouraged because of its commitment to the unity of Nigeria and maintenance of its territorial integrity”.
Babangida said he and other like-minds proposed as far as back as 1989 the possibility of handing over the country’s leadership to younger people who have the passion and zeal to propel it on the path of development and growth, but the older generation was recalcitrant then.

Speaking over the weekend during an Economic Summit, the Director of Research Centre, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Niger State, Prof. Nuhu Obaje, said the corporation should constitute itself into a vehicle to acquiring mining titles from the Mining Cadastre Office in Abuja.
He quoted Babangida as saying: “I want to share in the glory of this occasion and to congratulate the Corps Marshal, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi, and the entire staff of the Organization for their worthy achievements over the years.
Speaking at an event to mark the 30th anniversary of the Corps in Abuja, Babangida noted that increasing population would place additional burden on the Corps.

A statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, quoted Babangida as making the assertion in Minna, Niger State while receiving members of the PDP National Working Committee on Saturday.
It was gathered that during their indoor meeting, Secondus told the former Nigerian leader that the PDP is ready for the 2019 general elections.

The party stated this in a statement by Malam Bolaji Abudullahi, its National Publicity Secretary, in Abuja, and described late Shagaya as a staunch party man.
