In a post on the Twitter handle of the Defence Headquarters, the military said it was firmly in control of Gwoza, a town in Borno State that Shekau claimed had come under its control
The residents of these communities had suffered several attacks including the shooting of nine worshippers in a church in Attagara Village during a church service last Sunday
The armed insurgents stormed the church service, shooting sporadically
The procession of the attackers also included Armoured Personnel Carriers and motorcycles and they were armed with explosives, petrol bombs and other heavy arms and ammunition
Sources in Gwoza said many insurgents had earlier in the day intercepted a vehicle loaded with bread, slaughtered four of the occupants and drove the vehicle towards Sambisa Forest
A soldier, however, lost his life during the shootout with the insurgents in Gwoza, Borno State, while three others were wounded
