His thoughts, ideals, views on journalism and in life motivated many of us who came close to him and will continue to inspire us. Here are my remarks as the tributes flow in praise of a good man that he was.

Mallam Ismaila Isa Funtua (1942-2020), who died in Abuja on July 20 at the age of 78, evokes different emotions in different people. To many, he was just a friend and ally of President Muhammadu Buhari, while others would simply tag him as a member of the Aso Rock cabal, consisting of himself, late Mallam Abba Kyari, Chief of Staff to the President and Mallam Mamman Daura.

Evangelist Bamidele Olumilua was a gentleman of the highest status and grade; he doubled as a gentleman of gentlemen. He was brilliant, witty, cerebral, profound, suave, civilised and cosmopolitan. It is repeating the obvious to say that he was intellectually deep and religiously sound. To those of us who knew and worked with him closely, his niceties were mesmerising.
