In Yakubu’s time, Nigeria came up with the Electoral Act 2022, which indeed is a different kind of law, an advancement from the Electoral Act 2010.
Browsing: Electoral Act 2022
Section 84(12) of the Electoral Act 2022, which was signed by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), provides: “No political appointee at any level shall be a voting delegate or be voted for at the convention or congress of any political party for the purpose of the nomination of candidates for any election.”
INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said this at the second quarterly meeting of Resident Electoral Commissioners.
The lawyer and politician made this assertion in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Abuja.
Festus Okoye, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information, Voter Education, and Publicity, said this in Lagos.
The IPAC National Chairman, Yabagi Yusuf, disclosed the position of the body to newsmen on Monday in Abuja.
The notice was pasted at the gate of the commission for public viewing.
This of course runs parallel to that which we witnessed in the past when self interest overrode the nation’s and the fashioning of electoral acts.
It is gratifying to note that the current Bill comes with a great deal of improvement from the previous Electoral Bill 2021.
