”Following the recent attacks on some communities by some recalcitrant heartless hoodlums, leading to the killings of several innocent citizens of our dear state, Matawalle has directed the cancellation of the June 12, Democracy Day celebration”, Dosara said in a statement in Gusau, on Saturday.

In her Democracy Day message, Mrs Tinubu said: “I congratulate the government and citizens of Nigeria at home and in the diaspora on the commemoration of the commencement of the fourth republic, and the longest chain of civilian rule our country, Nigeria, has witnessed.

In a statement by its secretary-general, Chief Willy Ezugwu, to commemorate Democracy Day, CNPP noted that the APC-led government has carried on “theoretically” in the last six years as pro-June 12, but has, in practice, exhibited anti-democratic tendencies, either by oversight or consciously.

On June 12, President Buhari addressed the nation. Other political leaders issued statements. But there was no celebration as we knew it. The entire country had been overtaken by the COVID-19 pandemic, with its social distancing, physical distancing, new normal regimental orders. The deadly disease overshadowed everything. As at May 29, 2020, Nigeria had recorded 8, 915 confirmed cases of Corona Virus with 259 deaths.
