A statement by the British High Commission in Nigeria on Friday said the additional donation to Nigeria brought the total number of vaccine doses donated by the UK to 1,292,640.
The support from the Government of Japan complements the work of the COVAX Facility, an international vaccine procurement mechanism working to ensure that people in all countries have quick and equitable access to vaccines.
The government said this in reaction to a question from a Twitter user, @idowudotun, who wondered why the state was yet to commence vaccination even after many of its citizens have completed the registration to make them eligible for the state’s vaccination exercise.
A statement issued by MTN on Tuesday titled, ‘First set of MTN donation of 1.4 million doses of vaccines received by Nigeria’, noted that the MTN Group had contributed $25m for the vaccines, a combination of doses of AstraZeneca vaccines from the COVAX facility and from the AU COVID-19 vaccination programme.
The Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Danladi Atu, confirmed this on Wednesday in Jos while inspecting the vaccine at the European Union Prime Cold Chain located at the state secretariat.
The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire; the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu and Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Faisal Shuaib, who organised the ceremony.
The agency disclosed this in a series of messages posted on its Twitter handle, @NphcdaNG, on Monday.
This was made known in a joint statement by the World Health Organisation, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) on Sunday in Abuja.
Shuaib also said the PTF would ensure an efficient roll out of COVID-19 vaccination in Nigeria.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu made this known in a statement highlighting the update on the management of COVID-19 in the state on Sunday.
The statement quoted Okonjo-Iweala as disclosing this after a closed-door meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, in Abuja.
“More than 170 countries have joined the COVAX facility,’’ Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in pre-recorded comments in a webinar ahead of Friday’s deadline to join the facility.
