Senior Researcher, Africa Programme at the CPJ, Jonathan Rozen, who made the call, added that the challenges confronting journalists cut across borders.
The committee said 70 per cent of the jailed journalists were charged with anti-state activities, including being part of groups considered as terrorists by authorities
The group said at an event on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on Friday that journalists were regularly threatened, attacked and killed and also being imprisoned in record numbers around the world
The assault, according to CPJ, occurred on July 21, 2018 at a concert in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who issued the rebuttal in Abuja said the person the CPJ was referring to was never a journalist.
The statement said Abba has remained in detention since July 2015 for his reporting
Robert Mahoney, CPJ Deputy Director, said over 70 journalists were killed for their work during the year, compared with 74 in 2012 and Middle East accounted for two-thirds of the deaths in 2013
