Browsing: Chief Olusegun Obasanjo

Atiku was the highest after President Muhammadu Buhari in terms of political leadership profile. Having deputized President Olusegun Obasanjo between 1999 and 2007, he remains the longest serving Vice President ever in Nigeria’s history. Apart from his successful joint ticket with Obasanjo, he had slugged out with incumbent President Buhari and immediate past President Goodluck Jonathan. He is a business mogul and unlike a number of other politicians, he proudly own up to his stupendous wealth. He has followers across the country and his political structures abound everywhere.

In a speech presented on his behalf by an aide, Chief Idowu Akanle, at the formal opening of an ultra-modern mega fuel station along the Sagamu Interchange on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Obasanjo stated that the erection of new fuel outlets would not only guarantee product supply, but also a means of creating jobs and boosting the economy to ensure that the lives of many Nigerians are touched in many positive ways

To this end, Obasanjo described as worrisome the “poor funding, challenging and ageing infrastructures, recurrent strike actions of the health workers and the mortality report documented by the hospital over the past five years, which shows a steady trend in the incidence of cancer related deaths and collectively Non Communicable Diseases, which account for almost 80 per cent of deaths”.

Apart from the failed attempt made by General Sani Abacha to take over the company when he was the military head of state, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo also tried to close the company when he was the President and this coincided with the time he had a frosty relationship with his deputy, Atiku Abubakar. Obasanjo felt that the best way to cripple Atiku was to close down Intels and he pushed so hard but had to stop when relevant agencies drew his attention to the security implications of his order if it is implemented. That security implication of crippling the company still has not changed.
