The President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, led a joint delegation of Nigeria’s National Assembly on a three-day working visit to the United States recently. This unprecedented visit consisting of members from both chambers of the National Assembly led to discussions of issues of national interest being raised with the US Chamber of Commerce, Council on Foreign Relations, the United States Institute of Peace and select members of the US Congress.

In a statement on Friday by Timothy Adewale, SERAP’s Deputy Director, the organization said while it appreciated the expressed commitment by Saraki to transparency and accountability of the National Assembly, and the rare opportunity to dialogue with him, it remained deeply concerned that the leadership of the Senate has unfortunately not satisfactorily addressed the damaging allegations by Prof. Itse Sagay, the Chairman Presidential Advisory Committee against Corruption, that a Nigerian senator gets N29 million in monthly pay and over N3 billion a year

What makes the occasion more remarkable is that since the return of democracy in Nigeria 18 years ago, this particular visit had the largest delegation of visiting legislators from the US, a pointer to the fact that the United States of America and the International Community as a whole are starting to notice the giant strides of Nigeria’s parliament.
