The President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, led a joint delegation of Nigeria’s National Assembly on a three-day working visit to the United States recently. This unprecedented visit consisting of members from both chambers of the National Assembly led to discussions of issues of national interest being raised with the US Chamber of Commerce, Council on Foreign Relations, the United States Institute of Peace and select members of the US Congress.

Saraki, who announced the visit on Thursday at plenary, told his colleagues that he would be addressing a special plenary session at the Russian Federal Council.

Saraki, who is set to depart for Ghana on Sunday on a two-day official visit, is expected to address the Ghanaian Parliament on how to build a stronger African relationship

What makes the occasion more remarkable is that since the return of democracy in Nigeria 18 years ago, this particular visit had the largest delegation of visiting legislators from the US, a pointer to the fact that the United States of America and the International Community as a whole are starting to notice the giant strides of Nigeria’s parliament.
The situation was no different in Nigeria as the required constitutionally age for being elected as president or vice president was 40 years until the relentless efforts of the Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki-led senate to change these laws by passing the ‘not too young to run bill’.
