The ECOWAS Court of Justice gave the ruling on Friday in a long drawn case over the detention of the journalist
The protest took place on Wednesday.
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has dragged the government of Nigeria and Cross River State Government of Governor Ben Ayade to ECOWAS Court of Justice in Abuja “over the prolonged, arbitrary detention; unfair prosecution; persecution, and sham trial of journalist Agba Jalingo.”
“In court, it is Federal Government versus Agba Jalingo, not Cross River State,” Ayade told reporters on Monday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where he went to meet President Muhammadu Buhari
The National Association of Nigerian Students has called for the release of Agba Jalingo, a journalist, charged with treasonable felony among other allegations, from correctional centre custody.
In the letter, the foremost journalist, who has been in and out of detention for allegedly casting aspersion on the Cross River State Governor, Ben Ayade, said he would not get justice from Amobeda based on a conversation the judge had with some unidentified persons on his case
The group made the declaration in a statement on Wednesday.
SERAP said: “Across the country, state governors and federal government are charging citizens, mostly journalists, bloggers and activists, with serious crimes such as ‘treason’, ‘treasonable felony’ or bogus crime of ‘insulting public officials’, simply for exercising their human rights.”
This was contained in a statement issued in Lagos on Tuesday by the MRA’s Programme Director, Ayode Longe.
