Now in its eighth year, AFRIMA, the ultimate recognition of African music globally honours African artistes, music producers, songwriters, video directors, Disc Jockeys, choreographers/dancers, and movie/film producers living on the continent or in diaspora as well as international acts with the 23.9 carat gold-plated AFRIMA trophy.
AFRIMA in partnership with the African Union Commission, AUC, is the pinnacle of African music awards globally.
In the meeting held virtually for approval and announcement between the International Committee of AFRIMA and The AFRIMA International Jury in March, 2021, the Jury noted that the new categories were selected to capture all aspects of music including its utilization in the movie industry and in recognition of the waves being made by African artists in the world. The addition of these three categories brings the total to 40 Award categories.
The appointment was announced on the 17th of May, 2021, in Jo’borg, South Africa following the unanimous decision of the International Committee of AFRIMA.
This decision was reached during the two-hour Conference/Meeting of the International Congress of AFRIMA held via Zoom on August 11, 2020 at 1600 hour (GMT), with the theme: “Post COVID-19 Developmental Gaps and Challenges in the African Music and Entertainment Industries: African Regions and Countries Perspective.”
This was revealed by the organisers in a statement on Saturday.
The Minister disclosed this at the All Africa Music Awards at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos on Sunday.
Innocent Tuface Idibia, popularly aka 2Baba and Burna Boy were among the artistes that won awards at the 6th All Africa Music Awards.
Renowned music artiste will get to perform live on stage to thousands of music lovers in a high-octane environment.
The awards will be broadcast live to over 80 countries, starting at 7:30pm and the live broadcast of the Red Carpet preceding by 4pm.

The African Union Commission and the International Committee of AFRIMA have announced that the 6th edition of the All Africa Music Awards themed ‘Feel Africa’ will be hosted in Lagos State, Nigeria in association with the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, Nigeria from November 20 to 23, 2019.
The International Committee also unequivocally condemned the reverberating reprisal attacks in some countries in Africa such as Nigeria and Zambia.

The Committee cited lack of capacity by the Host Country to meet the financial and contractual obligations entered to on July 12, 2018 necessary to retain hosting the biggest music event in Africa.

The International Committee of the All Africa Music Awards has joined the African and global music community to mourn the death of African music legend, Dr. Oliver ‘Tuku’ Mtukudzi, who died on January 23, 2018, aged 66 in Harare, Zimbabwe.
