The Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme on Monday empowered 744 persons in Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State.
Announcing the beneficiaries at the ceremony, the Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, New-World Safugha, presented different starter packs to 209 artisans and tricycles to 65 commercial operators.
The artisans are two vulcanizers, 51 hair dressers, 71 tailors, 20 welders and two video cameramen.
The commissioner further presented N30,000 cash each to 470 beneficiaries, to enable them to start up small-scale businesses.
Safugha said that Isoko North was among the 22 councils in the state where SURE-P had empowered 6,600 persons.
The commissioner said that the SURE-P was designed by the federal and state governments to empower the less privileged.
He said that the Delta State Government was determined to ensure that SURE-P impacted positively on the people’s lives.
Safugha, however, advised the beneficiaries to make good use of the items and not to sell them.
Earlier, the Transition Chairman of the council, Samuel Idise, commended the federal and state governments for initiating SURE-P.
The transition chairman added that the programme had enabled many poor people at the grassroots to engage in businesses.
Idise said that earlier in the year, more than 120 indigenes were engaged by the programme in community services and the beneficiaries had consistently been receiving stipends on monthly basis.
He advised the beneficiaries to utilise the resources judiciously to have multiplier effect on the growth of the council.
