Eight-time African champions, the Super Falcons, have qualified for next year’s FIFA Women World Cup in France.
The Thomas Dennerby-girls punched their World Cup ticket courtesy a 4-2 penalty win over Cameroon after 120 minutes of action failed to produce any goals.
The Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon with their patient buildup and attractive passing game bossed the ball possession and carved out the better chances in front of goal.
Nigeria, on the other hand, struggled in front of goal despite the quality of players like Asisat Oshoala, Desire Oparanozie and Francisca Ordega.
Such was the frustration of the ineffective strike force that Dennerby had to haul off both Oparanozie and Ordega in regulation time.
Cameroon’s undoing was that they did not have the cutting edge inside the Falcons box and even when it seemed they had bridged the champions defence, goalkeeper Tochukwu Oluehi was safe and steady to keep them out.
And it will be Oluehi who again kept out Cameroon’s decisive penalty to send Nigeria through to the final of this year’s African Women Cup of Nations.
