Nigeria’s twin sports couple, former Enyimba FC of Aba goalkeeper, Sunny Pekos, and his Turkey-based professional volleyball player wife, Esther Dusu, who runs SunEsther Sports Foundation, have launched a new initiative: Goodluck Nigeria.
The initiative is meant to take sports to troubled parts of Nigeria.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja about the project, the Egypt-based goalkeeper until last season said: “Nigeria is too blessed a nation when sport is the matter. Given our experiences in nations that are not as privileged as ours, the marked difference we have seen is organisation, making it obvious that we need a change.”
Asked what their project has to do with the President of the nation, Goodluck Jonathan, the soft-smiling goalkeeper, who was a member of the CAF Champions Cup second trophy winning team, said: “It’s not about the President as a person. It is about the fact that God is good to us as a people. Goodluck Jonathan is just a vessel.”
He added: “The whole crises in the nation are honestly disturbing. We are sad. We are not ready to join the complaining lot. We intend to be change agents since both of us are professional athletes. Our message to Nigerians is: this is not the time for us to fight or lay blames for all that had happened. We want Nigerians to support this initiative with prophetic prayers.
“Did God not promise through his servants to change this country? We must in our various corners and with the skills and material support you can change the life of one person each. This way, millions of people will have a new face and fate in tomorrow.”
He explained that “Goodluck translates to God of our destiny lead (us into) change and knowledge. We will train some youth coaches who can enter into communities and train the youths and kids in some sports disciplines, while we will bring some monitoring and exposure programmes to help them grow and give them hope in their tomorrow from today. This is our own way of giving back to our society.”
