Students of Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State have hailed the state government for rescinding its decision to merge the institution with Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye.
The students, who paid a solidarity visit to the Office of the Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, lauded his action and pledged their support to his administration.
Amosun in Ijebu-Ode on Saturday announced the reversal of the planned merger at the 80th birthday celebration of Oba Sikiru Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland.
The students carried placards with various inscriptions hailing the governor, while they chanted solidarity songs.
Okikiola Ogunsola, the President of TASUED Chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students, described Amosun as “a father and caring governor with interest of the young ones at heart”.
The Secretary to the State Government, Taiwo Adeoluwa, who received the students on behalf of the governor, said that a Governing Council would soon be constituted for the institution.
Adeoluwa assured the students their other demands, including provision of buses, would be granted as soon as possible.
He urged them to take their studies seriously and resist attempts by politicians to use them for selfish ends.
