President Muhammadu Buhari has taken on the Academic Staff Union over its eight months strike.
The President spoke on the strike on Tuesday when he met with the 36 States Governors at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Buhari said the union had failed to take into consideration the larger challenges facing the country.
He said: “Government conceded something.
“The problem is that they refused to look at the problem of the whole country.
“The Minister of Labour is working hard at it.
“It is amazing how ASUU will stay out of classrooms for so long.
“There’s a need for our elites to understand the challenges facing the country.”
ASUU had been on strike since March.
The Federal Government had through the Minister of Labour, Employment and Productivity, Chris Ngige, announced that it will make N70 billion available to ASUU as part of the agreement they had.
Since the agreement was reached, ASUU has yet to revert to the government on its position.
However, the President of the Union, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, told The PUNCH that the lecturers will not call off their strike until those yet to be paid were settled.
