A 44-year-old storekeeper, Adeniyi Adesanya, who allegedly stole his employer’s goods worth N5 million on Thursday appeared in an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos .
The police charged Adesanya, who resides in Igbogbo market, with theft.
The prosecution counsel, Donjour Perezi, told the court that the defendant committed the offence between July 1, 2019 and September. 10, 2020 in Gbagada, Lagos.
Perezi said the defendant who is an employee of the complainant, Ajoke Stores LTD, received goods from her customers and diverted them for his use.
During internal audit in November, he said, the management discovered that goods worth N5 million were stolen by the defendant.
He said that items missing include a Thermocool generator, a Scanfrost fridge, cartons of Peak powdered milk, evaporated milk.
The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of Section 287 (7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The section prescribes seven years jail term for stealing by clerks and servants.
Adesanya pleaded not guilty.
Magistrate O.A Daodu admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N250, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
Daodu adjourned the case until January 19 for mention.
