A pharmacist with the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, AbdulHamid Alege, on Saturday in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, said spicy food and excessive alcohol could cause mouth odour.
Alege said this in his lecture, which was part of the activities at the “keep fit” exercise for the month of April for members of staff of UITH.
He also said dental plaque, the sticky stuff which coats the teeth and inflame the gum where germs grow, has been identified as the major cause of mouth odour.
The pharmacist said the best way to prevent mouth odour is to brush the teeth after each meal and to consult a dentist if mouth odour persists.
He said: “A regular dental check is a must for good dental health.
“Everybody should take a greater interest in dental care and checks.”
Alege said Africans generally have very good and strong set of teeth, but because of bad dental care, the teeth invariably become infected and damaged.
He said: “All activities, which are detrimental to oral health, such as excessive consumption of sweets, sugary products and chocolates, should be avoided or limited.
“The use of chewing sticks is valuable for keeping the teeth clean and healthy, but it should be used not just for chewing but for brushing the teeth carefully.”
The pharmacist called for the use of toothpastes which have been tested and recommended by the Dental Association of Nigeria.
The keep fit exercise was led by the hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Prof. Abdulwaheed Olatinwo.
Olatinwo used the opportunity to charge the institution’s members of staff to be security conscious, in view of the security situation in the country.
