Hon. Samuel Ikon, the Speaker of the Akwa Ibom House of Assembly, on Thursday emerged as the new Chairman of The Conference of State Legislatures of Nigeria.
Ikon garnered 15 votes to defeat his Ekiti State counterpart, Hon. Adewale Omirin, who did not score any vote.
Speakers from 15 states took part in the election.
The meeting also elected a Deputy chairman, Financial Secretary, Treasurer and six Zonal Vice chairmen of the association.
Speaking to newsmen after he was declared winner, Ikon promised to work closely with the National Assembly to ensure the attainment of financial autonomy for state legislatures.
He said the new executices would come up with programmes that would promote inter-parliamentary solidarity and best practices with a view to deepening democratic culture among legislators.
The new CSLN boss pledged to enhance harmonious relationship between the executive and the legislature and foster healthy cooperation among state lawmakers.
“My administration will initiate programmes that would facilitate understanding of lawmaking powers of the legislature such as retreat and publication of educative materials on the working of the parliament,” Ikon said.
Earlier, the Speaker, Borno State House of Assembly, Hon. Abdulkarim Lawan, said the conference would assist the Federal Government to find lasting solutions to the current security challenge facing the country.
Lawan, the newly elected Deputy Chairman of the Conference, expressed the concern of the conference over the abduction of schoolgirls from Government Girls’ Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State.
The lawmaker commended the international community for their support to the Federal Government in the fight against the menace of insurgency in the North East.
