The ranks of the All Progressives Congress in the South West appears broken over who replaces Adeniyi Adebayo as the Deputy National Chairman (South) of the party.
The position became vacant following the appointment of Adeniyi as a Minister by President Muhammadu Buhari.
While the Ekiti State chapter of the APC has nominated a former Senate Deputy Chief Whip, Gbenga Aluko, for the position of the Deputy National Chairman, there are those routing for a former Governor of Oyo State, Abiola Ajimobi.
While Aluko is from Ekiti State, the same as Adebayo, now Minister of Trade, Industry and Investment, Ajimobi hails from Oyo State.
However, there were feelers on that the Zonal Executive Committee of the party was in favour of Ajimobi.
Owing to this, APC members from Ekiti State on Tuesday stormed the Osun State secretariat of the party in Osogbo to protest an alleged plot to the State the opportunity to re-present another candidate to replace Adebayo.
The APC Chairmen in the six South West states and the Zonal Executives were holding a meeting on filling the vacant seat at the party secretariat in Osogbo, Osun State when members from Ekiti State stormed the place and protested.
The Ekiti State chapter of the party in a statement described as untrue reports by certain sections of the social media in Oyo State that Ajimobi has being endorsed as the next Deputy National Chairman of the party.
In a statement released in Ado Ekiti by the state APC Director of Media and Publicity, Elder Sam Oluwalana, on behalf of the State Chairman of the party, Paul Omotosho, the meeting held at Osogbo, the Osun State capital, where the purported endorsement was made, there was no mention of any sort of endorsement at the meeting and the report was reckless and smacks if mischief and misinformation on the part of the writers.
The statement reads: “I was present at the meeting and nobody said anything about endorsing anybody for the position at that meeting.
“We made our position clear that our state has to serve out its tenure and that we are endorsing Senator Gbenga Aluko for the position.
“The South West chairman of the party, Pastor Oluwajana received a petition which we submitted at the meeting and promised to forward same to the National Secretariat if the party. That was all that transpired at the meeting. For anybody to say or report anything to the contrary is not only false, but pure mischief.”
