South African swimmers were the dominant team with 26 medals as the swimming event at the ongoing second edition of the African Youth Games.
According to the Games’ website, Team South Africa finished tops in the event with 13 gold, eight silver and five bronze medals.
It stated that the swimming event began on May 22 and ended on May 26 at the University of Botswana’s swimming pool, Gaborone in Botswana.
Egypt came second best with a total of 22 medals, comprising 10 gold, four silver and eight bronze medals.
Team Namibia finished third with four medals made up of two gold, one silver and one bronze.
Hosts Botswana could only afford sixth position with a total of three medals – two silver and a bronze.
Nigerian swimmers crashed out in the preliminary round of most events in both the male and female categories.
While the boys did not qualify in the 50 metres butterfly, the girls placed 26th in the 100 metres butterfly.
The Nigerian team were also 12th in the mixed team’s 4 x 50 metres medley relay, while the boys placed 11th and 17th in the 50 metres breaststroke.
