Alhaji Shehu Achida, the Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party in Wurno Local Government Area of Sokoto State, has defected to the All Progressives Congress along with 5,872 others.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the defectors were received by the APC gubernatorial candidate in the state, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, at the party’s gubernatorial campaign rally in Wurno town, headquarters of the council area.
Addressing the defectors at the rally, Tambuwal said the APC represented the hope of Nigerians in their desire to achieve good governance.
“You are equal as there is no new and old member in APC,” he said.
Tambuwal, who is also the Speaker of the House of Representatives, called on leaders of the party to embark on house-to-house campaigns in order to ensure the success of the party’s candidates in next month’s general election.
He said an APC-led administration, if elected, would ensure the delivery of democratic dividend to Nigerians irrespective of tribe, religion, ethnicity and political differences.
In his remarks on behalf of the defectors, Achida said that the lack of concern for the plight of the people was responsible for their defection from the PDP to to APC.
He said that 10 executive members of the party, including elders and a former PDP chairman in the area, were among those who defected to APC.
On his part, Governor Aliyu Wamakko called on party supporters to ensure they acquired their permanent voter cards.
Wamakko said the APC-led administration in the state would continue to implement people-oriented programmes aimed at enhancing the lots of the people irrespective of political party differences.
“We will continue to provide all that is required to improve on the wellbeing of our people through good governance,” Aliyu said.
