The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has accused the police of lying in the case involving the killing of two officers of the Corps in Lagos State last week.
The boss of the NSCDC, Ade Abodunrin, leveled the accusation over the weekend when he visited the Lagos State Command of the Corps to commiserate with the officers and men over the alleged brutal killing of two officers of the corps by the police in Ikorodu area of Lagos State.
The slain officers have been identified as Gabriel Adaji and Innocent Aigbe.
Abodunrin, while briefing journalists, said contrary to police reports that his men engaged in a shootout with policemen, his on-the-spot assessment of the scene of crime shows his men never fired a shot against the police.
To buttress his point, he pointed out bullets holes on the side window, windscreen and the fuel compartment of the vehicle used by his officers when they were attacked at the Isawo area of Ikorodu on March 27.
He said: “My men did not shoot back because only our men were shot.
“Two were killed while five sustained wounds.
“Our patrol vehicle was also riddled with bullets while the vehicle of the police was not touched by anything.”
Abodunrin also visited the families of the slain officers, where he was informed that one of the deceased, Adaji, was killed three days to his wedding.
Simon, the elder brother of the deceased and the family members were all looking forward to the wedding slated for March 30.
Simon said: “But our joy was turned into sadness.
“Everything at the Iyana Ipaja family home had been put in place for this wedding but it would not be.
“We urge you sir to help us.
“Our brother died while serving the country and we demand justice for the deceased.
“He has left a vacuum that can never be filled and we will miss him but we don’t want his death to be in vain.
“We are Idoma people and according to our tradition, corpses of young people are meant to be buried on time.
“We urge you to use your good offices to ensure that the autopsy is done quickly and the corpse released for burial.”
Abodunrin, at the Apapa home of the second slain officer, Innocent Aigbe, was greeted with wailing.
Aigbe’s wife was in shock and could not utter a word.
The deceased’s uncle, Reverend Sam Eboigbe, urged the NSCDC boss to find the killers of their son, whom he described as a gallant officer and a responsible father and husband.
Eboigbe said: “His wife is still in shock and she still asks when her husband is going to come back home because she has yet to come to terms with reality.
“Our son (Aigbe) was a dedicated officer and his death was saddening.
“All we want is justice.”
While responding to the plea of the families, Abodunrin said the corps will not abandon them.
He said: “Justice will be served.
“President Goodluck Jonathan has already ordered investigation.
“The slain officers were insured and their families will be taken care of.”
Abodunrin, while addressing the officers and men of the Lagos State Command, urged them to remain calm.
He said: “One of our men, Olanreju Gbedeogun, who was arrested by the police at the scene, has been released.
“I urge you to remain calm and not take the law into your hands.”
