Senators on Thursday were divided across party lines over the composition of the board of the Federal Emergency Road Maintenance Agency by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, had read The President’s letter on the floor of the Senate in which former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Tunde Lemo, was nominated as Chairman of FERMA.
However, trouble started when the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, rose on a Constitutional Point of Order and drew the attention of the Senate to the manner in which the government is making appointments to favour only a section of the country, which he said is contrary to Federal Character.
Ekweremadu’s statement on Buhari attracted the anger of mainly members of the ruling party at the federal level, the All Progressives Congress, who kicked against the point of order raised by the Deputy Senate President.
Senator Chukwuka Utazi and Senator Obinna Ogba who were as well not comfortable with The President’s appointment since the inception of his administration raised point of order in the same matter, which theSenate President noted.
Saraki tactically calmed the nerves of the lawmakers by asking the Senate Committee on Federal Character to report back to the Senate next week Tuesday on the issue.
