The Senate on Wednesday resolved to summon the Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali, over the invasion of several Cross River State communities by over 80 Cameroonian soldiers in January 2018.
Dan-Lai is expected to appear before Senate Joint Committees on Defence and Security and National Intelligence to shield more light on reported invasion of Nigerian communities by Cameroonian soldiers.
The decision was sequel to a motion sponsored by Senator John Enoh, who informed the Senate about the influx of refugees from Cameroon into Obanliku, Boki, Etung and Ikom local government areas of Cross River State.
Enoh said some school buildings now serve as temporary refugee camps, which are uninhabitable, and family that makes use of them are deprived of private space.
He added that some of the refugees are currently accommodated by people living in border communities with some household taking care of about 20 refugees with their facilities over stretched.
He said over 6,000 refugees are currently squatting at Obanliku, Bold, Etung and Ikom Local government areas of the state.
Enoh said as at December 16, 2017, the United Nations Human Rights Commission had biometrically registered 10,000 arrivals in remote areas of Cross River State and indicated that thousands more are awaiting registration.
After debate on the motion, the Senate called on the Nigerian military authorities to increase military presence and intensify border patrol within the area to prevent further act of trespass by Cameroonian soldiers.
