The Senate lied over the statement it issued about the invitation of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, that one of the reasons the number one police officer was invited because of the saga involving Senator Dino Melaye, The Eagle Online is reporting.
However, in the Senate’s order paper of May 9, 2018 seen by The Eagle Online, it was stated on Page 3 that the IGP will give explanation on recent killings across the country and the “inhuman treatment of Distinguished Senator Dino Melaye”.
The Eagle Online recalls that the statement of the Senate on Wednesday faulting Idris for not honouring its invitation but offering what it termed lame excuses, by its spokesman, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, claimed that the police boss was not invited over Melaye’s saga.
The statement said: “Let it be known that the IGP by trying to reduce the reason for his invitation by the senate to the arrest of Sen. Dino Melaye is simply holding on to straw. The issue of Sen. Melaye’s arrest has been overtaken by events.
“The courts are already handling the related cases. Our main concern is the security crisis across the country where people are being killed in scores on daily basis. The primary responsibility of the police is maintenance of law and order as well as protection of lives and property.”
However, The Eagle Online observed that the case was already in court when the Senate re-invited the IGP for the second time.
The Eagle Online recalls that the spokesman of the police, Jimoh Moshood, had in a statement said Idris could not have gone before the Senate to defend Nigeria over an issue that was already in court.
