The Senate Leader, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, on Tuesday donated N1.5 million to the Cross River Correspondent of Thisday newspaper, Jude Okwe, to enable him to undergo heart transplant.
Okwe was recently diagnosed as having an enlarged heart, which required surgery in an Indian hospital at the cost of N9 million.
Ndoma-Egba (PDP-Cross River), who made the donation in Calabar, said he was moved by the deteriorating health of the reporter.
Represented by his Special Assistant on Media, Sam Arikpo, Ndoma-Egba added that the donation was part of his contribution to the required amount for the operation.
The senator also appealed to other well meaning citizens to rally round the journalist to save his life.
The state Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ndoma Akpet, commended the lawmaker for the gesture.
Akpet urged other philanthropists, organisations and professional colleagues of the journalist to assist him.
Responding, Okwe thanked the senator for his continued support since the beginning of the ordeal, adding that the lawmaker had always shown concern over his health.
He said that the Indian hospital gave him up to June for the treatment and further appealed for more help from fellow citizens.
