Senator Samuel Anyanwu (PDP-Imo North) said on Tuesday that the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges received 65 petitions since the inception of the 8th Senate.
Anyanwu, who is the Chairman of the committee, said at an interactive forum with newsmen in Owerri on Tuesday that 35 of the petitions had been attended to.
He said 11 had been approved as presented by the committee, while others were under investigations.
He said the committee received a joint petition from the Nigeria Bar Association and the Nigeria Labour Congress against Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State on non-payment of workers’ salaries.
Anyanwu said the committee received another petition from the workers of Imo State House of Assembly also bordering on non-payment of salaries by the state government.
He said the committee employed wisdom to handle amicably most of the petitions which ordinarily could snowball into disagreements in the Senate.
He said the committee did not succumb to pressures and directives from outside while handling the petitions.
The chairman said the successes recorded by the committee had proved otherwise those who thought his choice as its chairman was wrong.
He said he had used his present position as the chairman of the committee to correct some wrong impressions about the Igbo.
Anyanwu appealed to Okorocha to reconsider his recent policies and directives against civil servants in the state, which was causing some ripples.
He urged the people of the state to pay their taxes to enable the government to provide the needed dividends of democracy.
Responding, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Imo State Council, Innocent Igwe, commended the senator for the good work he was doing and urged him not to relent.
