The Senate on Wednesday set up a Technical Committee to investigate the revenue and expenditure of the Nigeria Immigration Service, which runs several billions of naira.
The Committee consists of the Chairman and Vice Chairman of Committees on Anti-Corruption, Judiciary and Interior to be headed by the Committee on Interior, alongside the Ministries of Justice and Interior, Comptroller General of Immigration and the Economic Financial Crimes Commission.
The Committee is expected to submit its report in two weeks.
The Senate decision to set up the Committee was as result of the concerns raised during the consideration of the budget of the Nigerian Immigration Service as it concerns its expenditure and revenue.
Speaking on the report, Senator Solomon Adeola said the agency is operating as if it is not under the control of anybody.
Other senators who spoke also expressed worries over the lack of transparency and well documented budget report from the Immigration Service.
The President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, who expressed dissatisfaction with the reckless spending of revenue generated by the NIS, said if the leakages are blocked in the agencies, there will be no need to borrow money.
