A Senate Panel on Wednesday discovered another illegal withdrawal of N550 billion ($1.1 billion) from the account of the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas.
The withdrawal is different from the $1.05 billion allegedly withdrawn from the NLNG account for fuel subsidy, which the Senate mandated its Committee on Gas to investigate.
Speaking at the commencement of the probe, the Chairman of Senate Committee on Gas, Senator Bassey Akpan, revealed that documents available with the committee revealed that $650 million was withdrawn from the account on June 7, 2018, another $415 million and $86 million were also taken from the account.
The Chairman of the Committee asked the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation and Central Bank of Nigeria for supporting documents on these withdrawals from NLNG account.
Akpan, who was visibly angry over the absence of the NNPC Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Baru Mikanti, and the Governor of the CBN, Godwin Emefiele, at the investigative hearing mandated both the GMD of the NNPC and CBN governor to appear before the Committee next week Thursday.
According to chairman: “Your governor is found of ignoring our invitations.
“It is unacceptable.
“We just got your submission an hour ago and not supported by relevant documents.”
Akpan said the investigation is going to be concluded within two weeks and the report submitted to the Senate for consideration and approval.
