The Senate on Tuesday cleared the air over alleged lopsidedness in the promotion of Police officers under the watch of the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase.
It said there was fairness in the exercise.
The Senate Committee on Police Affairs had last week vowed to scrutinise the alleged lopsidedness in the promotion of officers of the Nigerian Police.
Addressing newsmen immediately after the Committee concluded scrutinising the list of police promotion under Arase, the Chairman of the Committee on Police Affairs, Senator Abu Ibrahim, said there was no disparity in the promotion of police so far.
Ibrahim said: “As far as we can see, there is no serious disparity.
“Out of the 37 police command Commissioners, North West has seven, North East nine, North Central eight, South-South five, South West six and South East has two,” he said.
Ibrahim said the committee has asked the Police to consider the South East in subsequent promotion to bridge the gap.
According to him, the police authorities have engaged an external examiner to look into the upgrading of policemen.
Ibrahim said: “The Police has 2,000 promotion vacancies and 13,000 policemen are qualified for it.
“So, the Police has engaged external examiner, the West African Examination Council, for the exercise.:
He urged Nigerians to always channel their grievances through appropriate authorities.
He said: “We were generous to look into the issue because no petition was written to us but because of the sensitive of the matter we looked into it.
“If people want their grievances to be properly looked into, let them write petitions.”
