Barely two weeks after the Senate vowed not to confirm appointments of nominees forwarded to it by the Presidency, the upper chamber on Wednesday backtracked on its resolution to suspend action on consideration of nominees.
This was just the Red Chamber received a report from its Committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission for confirmation of screened 12 Resident Electoral Commissioners.
The Senate, had on July 4, 2017 vowed that requests from the Presidency will not be considered any more until the removal from office of the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu.
However, at the resumption of plenary session, the Chairman of the Committee on INEC, Senator Suleiman Nazif (APC-Bauchi), laid the report for the Red chamber’s consideration and confirmation.
The presentation of the report was sequel to the introduction and reading of the 12 names by the Senate Leader, Senator Ahmad Lawan.
The 12 nominees are Asmanu Sani Maikudi from Katsina State, Sam Olugbadebo Olumekun from Ondo State, Mahmud Isah from Kebbi State, Rufus Oloruntoyin Akeju from Lagos State and Riskuwa Shehu from Sokoto State.
Others are Kassim Gana Geidam from Yobe State; Jibrin Ibrahim Zarewa from Kano State; Abdulganiyu Olayinka Raji from Oyo State, Samuel Egwu from Kogi State, Mike Igini from Delta State, Mustapha Zubairu from Niger State and Ahmad Bello Mahmud from Zamfara State.
The nominees are expected to be confirmed in the coming days or weeks.
