There is no gain-saying that most predictions at home and abroad point to the fact that President Muhammadu Buhari, as the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, has an edge over Atiku Abubakar of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party in the February 2019 Presidential election. The resounding support PMB receives on a daily basis from all the religious, ethnic and regional divides are indicators in this direction. From the north to the south, east to the west, PMB is, as expected, having an edge over the opposition candidate of the PDP.
It’s not by magic that right-thinking Nigerians are excited by the prospect of Buhari getting a second term in office to continue to serve Nigerians, free of any parochial sentiments, largely due to his performance in office in the last three and half years. Buhari inherited a government with an empty treasury and one that was in comatose economically, politically and socially due to serious insecurity through the length and breadth of the country. His actions so far speak volumes about these excitements by Nigerians.
The appreciable successes recorded by the administration in the areas of dealing with challenges of insecurity by the militants in the Niger Delta, the Boko Haram in the North-East, farmers-herdsmen clashes in the north-central, cattle rustling in the north-west, kidnappings in the east and west and other parts of the country have basically scored the administration high in the area of being alive to its responsibilities. Other areas that landmark achievements have been recorded so far include getting the economy out of recession, development of the country’s infrastructures and enhancement of human capital, among several others.
Hitherto his coming to power, Nigerians had lost hope that the country would pick up from the ruins of affliction of insecurity, hopelessness, dearth of infrastructure and economic meltdown among others, during the 16 years of PDP maladministration of the country.
Individuals and groups have singly and collectively acknowledged the untiring efforts of the Buhari administration to improve the quality of life of the Nigerian. It is undoubtedly in this spirit that a coalition of ex-militants in the Niger Delta region on the platform of Coalition of Progressive Niger Delta Ex-Militants pledged their “unreserved and unflinching” support to the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019. The group, during a marathon emergency meeting recently, resolved to work for PMB’s re-election next year.
The ex-militants, having embraced the peace and reconciliatory options offered them by the Buhari administration through its amnesty programme, are today the beneficiaries of the magnanimity of the President as a leader with human feelings.
The efforts of the President in “deepening peace and stability in the Niger Delta region by initiating meaningful projects and enhancement of human capital development through the Presidential amnesty programme cannot be swept under the carpet”, leaders of the group ably represented by its President and Secretary, Edeinowei Galabagalaba and Gbogbo Akporodo respectively reaffirmed, while announcing their unflinching total support to the President’s re-election bid.
This resolve of the group must be commended and supported by all and sundry, especially by other militants in the region who have not laid down their arms and are misled by a few elites in the region who are all out to destabilize the region and by extension the country for their personal gains.
It is therefore pertinent to appeal to other groups, especially youths that are usually used as political thugs to cause mayhem when things go against the interest of their parochial, myopic and selfish leaders, to shun violence and thuggery in pursuing our political agenda.
We all look forward to peaceful conduct of campaigns and elections so that the President will continue to make the lives of Nigerians more meaningful to themselves and the society at large.
