Several persons were feared dead on Saturday when a gas station exploded in Ondo State.
The station is located along Arakale Road, Akure, the Ondo State capital.
The explosion, said to have occurred at about 5:30pm, resulted in a huge fire.
The station was said to still be in operation, with several customers still purchasing domestic cooking gas, when the explosion occurred.
The number of casualties could not be established as at press time, but eyewitnesses put it as “high”.
The Punch in its Sunday edition reported that the situation was compounded by the fact that fire fighters arrived late.
A mob was reported to have stoned the fire fighters owing to this.
It was said to have taken the intervention of officers and men of the 32 Artillery Brigade, Akure to curtail the mob and allow the fire fighters do their job.
