David Wagner has reportedly agreed to be the new Schalke manager next season.
The 47-year-old left Huddersfield Town by mutual consent in January with the club bottom of the Premier League.
He had got them promoted to the top flight in 2017 and led them to safety the following season.
Huddersfield struggled this campaign, though, and were relegated with six games to go.
The Mirror report that Wagner has held talks with Schalke and has verbally agreed to take over in the summer.
The Bundesliga club are struggling this season and are fourth from bottom in the league.
They have only three games left to secure their top-flight status.
Manager Domenico Tedesco was sacked in March after his side were thrashed 7-0 by Manchester City in the Champions League.
Interim boss Huub Stevens is set to take charge of the club for the rest of the season.
Wagner joined Jurgen Klopp’s coaching staff at Borussia Dortmund when he retired from playing and was appointed their second team manager in 2011.
He then left for Huddersfield in 2015 and within two seasons had guided them to the Premier League via the play-offs.
