The Senate on Wednesday ordered the President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, to lead a delegation of senators to visit the Internally Displaced Peoples in Maiduguri, Borno State.
Also, the Senate implored the Federal Government to urgently set up a Presidential Intervention Committee on the rehabilitation of the North East Zone.
The Senate decision was sequel to a motion sponsored by Senator George Thompson Sekibo, with 35 other senators.
Sekibo told his colleagues that the motion was as a result of the disaster and mayhem inflicted on the country, especially the North East, by the Boko Haram terrorists.
He took the Senate down the memory lane, recalling the level of infrastructure damages and complete destruction of public and private institutions by these terrorists.
Sekibo said: “Thousands of personal buildings and properties, social amenities and infrastructures such as electricity and telephone services have been destroyed and therefore not in service in many parts of the zone.
“The lively hood of many indigenes of the area have been disrupted such that majority of the people are either in IDP camps or are helplessly roaming the street without any hope for their future.
“Government’s inability to rehabilitate and rebuild infrastructure of areas that have been taken back from the insurgents is a strong sign of disintegration.”
