The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has kept mum after a closed door session with the President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, over allegations that a senator gets N29 million in monthly pay, amounting to over N3 billion a year.
The group had written a letter to Saraki to confirm the development.
But rather than reply the letter and make the package for the senators public, Saraki invited SERAP for a meeting on Thursday.
The meeting, facilitated by one of the media aides of Saraki, Bamikole Omisore, was held in the Senate wing of the National Assembly.
But after the meeting, none of the parties spoke with the press.
As at press time, SERAP was yet to also issue a statement on its outcome.
Prominent Nigerian lawyer, Prof. Itse Sagay, had said a Nigerian senator gets N29 million in monthly pay in a speech he delivered at the Nigerian Society of International Law public lecture in Lagos.
Sagay said: “From the information I have gathered, a Nigerian Senator earns about N29 million a month and over N3 billion a year.”
He said the package includes basic salary of N2,484,245.50; hardship allowance, N1,242,122.70; constituency allowance, N4,968,509.00; furniture allowance of N7,452,736.50; and newspaper allowance, N1,242,122.70.
Others are wardrobe allowance, N621,061.37; recess allowance, N248,424.55; accommodation, N4,968,509.00; utilities, N828,081.83; domestic staff, N1,863,184.12; entertainment N828,081.83; personal assistant N621,061.37; vehicle maintenance allowance N1,863,184.12; leave allowance N248,424.55; severance gratuity N7,425,736.50; and motor vehicle allowance N9,936,982.00.
