The Vice President, Architect Namadi Sambo, failed on Saturday in his bid to reconcile aggrieved governorship aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party in Sokoto State.
This was as indication emerged that the aggrieved aspirants, especially the state’s Deputy Governor, Alhaji Mukhtar Shagari, did not agree to the terms of Sambo.
The positions of Shagari and Sambo, after the meeting, gave light to this development.
Shagari told newsmen after the meeting that it was inconclusive.
He said: “Like I said, at the meeting, we have discussed and we will continue with the discussions with our people.
“We are still going to meet to see how we can resolve the issue.”
When asked if reconciliation was achieved at the meeting, Shagari retorted: “Like the Vice President said, we are going to meet again.”
Sambo’s body language and answers to questions from newsmen also indicated that all did not go well at the meeting.
And unlike past meetings involving other states where the vice president had intervened, there was no clear cut pronouncement on the agreement reached.
In the case of other states also, the Office of the Vice President issued statements stating categorically that truce had been achieved.
This was the case for the reconciliation meeting for Lagos, Zamfara, Yobe, Kebbi and Kaduna States.
Sambo told newsmen after the meeting in Sokoto: “We thank God.
“We came to meet and congratulate our people on how the PDP is one in Sokoto State.
“As I said during our meeting, we thank God that of all those that contested primary elections, there is no winner, no vanquished.
“All the aspirants will go and inform their supporters.
“PDP is one.”
Those present at the meeting in Sokoto included Shagari; former Minister of Transport, Alhaji Yusuf Suleiman; Senator Abubakar Gada; and the governorship candidate, Ambassador Abdallah Wali.
