The Russian Embassy on Monday in Abuja refuted media reports that some Nigerian nationals involved in the sex industry were being giving visas by the embassy.
A statement from the embassy said that “combating illegal immigration and sex trafficking is one of the key priorities of the embassy’s consular activities in Nigeria.”
Media reports on June 20 quoted Nigeria’s Ambassador to Russia, Asam Asam, as confirming that no fewer than 200 Nigerian girls are trafficked every month to Russia for prostitution.
Asam said the problem was part of consular challenges faced by the Nigerian Embassy in Russia.
But the Russian Embassy said: “Such an opinion should be dismissed as incorrect and groundless.
“Russian visa sections, both in Abuja and in Lagos, process visa applications according to the concrete migration regulations.
“All Nigerian applicants, excluding government officials and diplomats are subject to a substantive interview with a consular officer and thorough document checking.”
