Four policemen have allegedly lost their lives in Lagos State during gun duels with armed robbers.
The robbery incidents, which led to the death of the policemen, reportedly took place in Surulere, Ejigbo and Orile Iganmu areas of the state.
The Surulere incident took place on Wednesday while the others happened on Sunday.
In the Surulere incident, two policemen – a Corporal and an Inspector – allegedly died when the robbers, who had laid ambush, opened fire on their patrol vehicle.
The robbers were said to driving an army green saloon car.
However, other policemen in the van responded swiftly and the robbers were said to have escaped towards Isolo area.
Two other policemen were killed, while three others were wounded during another gun battle with suspected armed robbers on Sunday.
The Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Ngozi Braide, confirmed the incidents on Monday.
Braide said that the gun battle, which took place in the Ejigbo and Orile-Iganmu areas, claimed the life of two policemen.
According to her, a gang of armed robbers engaged the police in Ejigbo.
The policemen killed one of the robbers but a policeman was wounded.
“A pump action gun was recovered from the robbers, while the wounded policeman was taken to a hospital, where he later died of gunshot wounds,” Braide said.
Braide added that another robbery gang engaged the policemen from the Iponri Police Division on the Orile-Iganmu Bridge at about 2.30am on Sunday.
She said: “One of our men was killed and three others wounded.
“One of the robbers was also killed, while other robbers escaped with bullet wounds.”
Meanwhile residents have called on the police to beef up security in Lagos State as the festive celebrations draw near.
