Rivers United have qualified for the group phase of the CAF Confederation Cup after they held hosts, Rayon Sports of Rwanda, to a goalless draw on Saturday (today) to go through 2-0 on aggregate.
Rivers United are the only Nigerian club still in the reckoning in continental football this year after Enugu Rangers, Wikki Tourists and FC Ifeanyiubah fell by the way side.
Both teams had chances to score in the return leg match played in Kigali, but in the end there were no goals to report even after Rivers United were reduced to 10 men after 57 minutes when fullback, Ifeanyi Nweke, was sent off for a dangerous foul.
Both Rivers United and Rayon Sports created chances after the interval, but neither team could make the most of these openings.
Rivers United held their hosts to a goalless, but entertaining first half.
Rayon attacked their visitors from the first whistle with star player Kwizera Pierrot posing the most danger from the onset.
Emeka Ogbugh ought to have put Rivers United in front after 17 minutes, but he failed to tap into an empty net off a free kick by the hard working Bolaji Sakin.
Rivers United goalkeeper, Sunday Rotimi, will deny Rayon with two saves in quick succession in the 24th and 25th minutes.
Rayon attacked with more urgency in the closing minutes of the half, but their forays failed to produce any dividend.
