Rivers United revived their CAF Confederation Cup hopes with a 2-1 home win over Uganda’s KCAA.
The Port Harcourt outfit have now leapt to second spot in Group A with six points from four matches in a tight section, which could well be determined by goals difference.
Rivers United thus avenged the 2-1 loss they suffered at KCCA earlier this month, but they barely had to hang in after the Ugandan double champions threw everything at them after the interval.
The first half belonged to the hosts, who raced two goals up courtesy of the impressive Bernard Ovoke in the second minute and then Frederick Obomate after 15 minutes.
However, poor defending allowed striker Geoffrey Serunkuma to pull a goal back for the visitors on the stroke of half time.
That goal re-energised the Ugandans who created several chances to at least draw level in the second half, but failed to do so.
KCCA defender Habib Kavuma was sent off for a second booking in the dying minutes for his deliberate foul on goal-bound Bolaji Sakin as Rivers United barely hung on to record their second win in Group A.
