The Rivers State Government says it has so far paid about N1.5 billion as compensation for land acquired in Omuoda and Aluu communities in Ikwerre Local Government Area.
Aleruchi Cookey-Gam, Administrator of the Greater Port Harcourt City Development Authority, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Port Harcourt, the state capital on Wednesday.
Cookey-Gam explained that the paid compensation was for lands acquired for the new Port Harcourt City Project.
According to her, the Rivers State Government, through her agency, will continue paying compensation for any land acquired for the new city project.
Cookey-Gam said that the compensation would only be paid to land owners after thorough physical verification and proper documentation of their property.
She said: “It is necessary to resolve all the problems arising from documentation as well as conflicting claims and several litigations, which have been delaying the process.
“These problems have made it difficult for claims to be ascertained and verified to enable the authority pay the compensation claims.”
Cookey-Gam urged surveyors and claimants’ lawyer(s) to provide accurate documentation that would fast-track payment of the compensation to land owners yet to be paid.
“We urge genuine property owners to submit copies of their surveys and documents before July 22,” she told NAN.
