The Chairman of the South-East Senate Caucus, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe; renowned legal practitioner, Solomon Asemota (SAN); and former Chairman of the National Electricity Regulation Council, Dr. Sam Amadi, among other dignitaries will reflect on the opportunities and strength in the restructuring of Nigeria on December 18, 2017.
The dignitaries will be speaking at the second conference of the South-East/South-South Network, holding at Viontel Hotel in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State.
In a statement made available to newsmen on Tuesday, signed by Kalada Apiafi, the coordinators of the conference said 11 State Governors and federal and state legislators from the two geopolitical zones are billed to attend the conference expected to provide incisive analysis of the current quest for a restructured Nigeria.
The group said: “The South-East and South-South Region of Nigeria has the largest concentration of human, natural and economic resources and the greatest human potentials in Sub-Sahara Africa but has been stunted by the inherent contradictions of the Nigeria state.
“The South-East and South-South Network is committed to transforming Nigeria into a true federation that reflects fiscal federalism.
“The SE/SS states, based on their geographical, cultural and social proximity, should establish an economic union to reap the abundant benefits of inter-State collaboration and economies of scale. This will allow each state to focus its resources on developing areas of comparative advantage, and entrench inter-regional trade and commerce.
“This conference shall once again make restructuring a topical discourse for the country and present to the South-East and South-South citizens reasons why restructuring should be pursued by all for the transformation of our polity.”
Other topics to be explored at the conference by speakers including Ifeanyichukwu Okonkwo and Ankkio Brigs, are: Fiscal Federalism – devolution of power and regional integration; An economic blueprint for the SE/SS region; addressing regional fears, mistrust and political concerns to ensure political integration; and Inter-regional commerce to actualise shared visions and prosperity.
