Some residents of Surulere in Lagos State on Tuesday called for the creation of more wards and another local government in the area.
They made the demand at a town hall meeting convened by Desmond Elliot, representing Surulere Constituency I at the Lagos State House of Assembly.
According to the residents, this will aid proper administration and socio-economic development across the length and breadth of the area.
Aduke Hussain, the Executive Secretary of Surulere Local Government, also said at the forum that development at the grassroots would aid good governance and growth of democracy.
Hussain said: ”The House of Assembly can help us make laws to better the lot of Surulere residents.
“We need a law that would make the Community Development Areas and Committees part and parcel of the Local Government.
”We also need more skill acquisition centres and recreational centres to occupy and empower our youths as well as the repair of bad roads in Surulere.”
Responding, Elliot said the purpose of the meeting was to interact and know the challenges facing the residents and people of his constituency.
He said: ”We, at the House, are there to put the needs of the people first before our aspirations and make laws for peace, order and benefit of the people.
”With this kind of forum, the legislature will be able to make policies for the growth, development and prosperity of Lagos State.
”I urge you to see this forum as your civic responsibility.
“I promise to take back all your needs to the house for deliberation.”
Elliot urged commercial motorcycle operators and tricycle riders to ply only the inner roads and avoid the expressways as well as obey traffic laws.
NAN reports that the constituency stakeholders’ meeting in Surulere had the theme: “Towards a Better Constituency Engagement.”
Meanwhile, another Lagos lawmaker, Victor Olusegun-Akande, on Tuesday donated 30 computers to teachers in Ojo Local Government Area of the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the items were presented to teachers of different schools during the stakeholders’ meeting in the area.
The lawmaker, who is representing Ojo Constituency 1 in the state Assembly, said the gesture was to aid the beneficiaries in the teaching profession.
Olusegun-Akande expressed appreciation to the people for the opportunity given to him to serve.
He said: “I want to see teachers in my constituency take the lead in the act of students’ character moulding.
“The computers are not part of my electioneering promises, but the idea to do this just struck me some weeks ago and I decided to bring it to bear today.”
Obasa Adekunle, a school teacher from Ojo Senior Model College, said the computers would in no small measure assist him in his class work.
Adekunle commended the lawmaker for his good and purpose-driven leadership, pledging to work hard to complement his effort at developing students of the area.
The event was attended by politicians, the civil society, traditional rulers and market women.
