On resumption of plenary session after Easter break, the House of Representatives on Tuesday turned down the invite from the Presidency for the lawmakers to attend a training on Executive-Legislative relationship.
The lawmakers adopted a motion from its Minority Whip, Hon. Samson Osagie, who brought the matter under Order 6 Rule 22 (Order of Privilege).
Osagie particularly took exception to the phrase “deepen the knowledge”, which he said meant they needed to be properly tutored.
He therefore enjoined his colleagues to disregard a presidential letter sent to them through the Special Adviser to the President on Legislative Matters, Senator Joy Emordi, inviting them to a conference to “deepen” the understanding of the Executive by National Assembly and to also help the lawmaking body understand its link with the Executive.
Osagie argued that honouring the invite will amount to admitting that the legislature needed to learn about the executive for a better relationship with it, when the reverse may be the case.
According to him, it also “gives the impression that the federal lawmakers or the legislative arm of government does not understand the executive arm of government.”
The plenary was presided over by Speaker Aminu Tanbuwal.
